Hemingboard Mac
A few weeks ago I came across this little app made for iOS, Android, Windows and Macs. Put simply it’s a quick way to get Synonyms, Rhymes and Puns from a few words you already have. In this review I’m going to focus on the Mac version as that is the only copy of Hemingboard I have purchased but it’s also available for the other platforms I mentioned above in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. For £7.11 (with 10% discount) it is priced a bit higher than your usual narrow feature app but realistically if you’re working on a niche piece of software it’s difficult to get enough exposure to pay for the businesses employees. Only the very luckiest indie developers make it big. Having said that the price isn’t too high and the functionality is solid. I didn’t experience any bugs or issues while using the software.
In the video above from Hemingboard’s website it shows succinctly how the application works. You simply high-lite a word you want to replace then click on the Hemingboard icon in the top menubar to get a list of replacement adjectives, nouns, puns and rhymes for that word. It works in every application I’ve tried and it’s very simple with very intelligent suggestions. The application supports keyboard shortcuts as well. The only downside I’ve found is it lacks force touch compatibility.
At the moment on my 2015 Retina MacBook Pro I have a force touch trackpad and when you force touch on a word it gives you the definition of that word from the built in dictionary. This is hardly useful for words you’ve just written and is much more useful when reading static text that you’ve not typed in yourself. So it would be nice if Hemingboard added the ability to force touch on text you’ve typed to get suggestions. Apart from this minor issue the app is very solid and easy to recommend for anyone who wants to spice up their typed vocabulary.
As I said at the start Hemingboard is £7.11 with an introductory 10% discount. You can purchase it directly from Hemingboards website at they also have some videos showing how it works on an iPhone. I believe I’ll be purchasing the iPhone version soon.
Here are the features: • Identical layout and size as the Apple version. Apple aluminum wireless keyboard.
